The Volcanic Frontier: ATV Safari
A 3 to 4 hour ATV expedition across the Reykjanes Peninsula, through active volcanic terrain, past steam vents and crater rows, along a black sand beach used as a film set, and through a canyon that marks the boundary between two tectonic plates.

Overview
The Peninsula
Reykjanes is the part of Iceland most visitors see only from the airport road. Beyond that corridor, the peninsula is a live geological exhibit: fresh lava fields, crater rows still venting steam, and a coastline where black sand meets the open Atlantic. The terrain is sparse, treeless, and looks more like a lunar surface than anything European. The tectonic rift that runs through Iceland is visible here at ground level, a crack in the earth where two continental plates are actively pulling apart, and you can drive straight through it.
The Ride
The route starts on mountain paths climbing toward Mt. Thorbjörn, then drops into the Eldvörp crater row, a stretch of over 100 craters with active steam vents that most visitors to the peninsula never see. From there, the trail moves to the Gunnuhver geothermal area, where boiling mud pools sit within meters of the path, and then out to the black sand beach at Sandvík. The ride finishes through a rocky canyon that sits directly on the tectonic plate boundary, the point where two continents are physically pulling apart.
The Local Difference
This is not a loop around a parking lot. The operator runs a small fleet across terrain they know by heart, adjusting routes for conditions and keeping groups tight enough that you are not eating dust from the buggy ahead. The buggies are capable machines on serious volcanic terrain, and the guides read the landscape in real time. This is for people who want to cover ground and see raw geology up close, not for those looking for a gentle sightseeing drive.

A fantastic activity to do in Iceland! The route passes through several spectacular spots! Driving one of their quad bikes is thrilling! The guides were very friendly and attentive throughout the tour. 100% recommended!
My ATV tour was an amazing experience. The landscapes were absolutely beautiful, and each location we visited was genuinely interesting. The guides were very professional and made the trip feel safe and well-organized. The speed was just right — not too fast, not too slow — allowing us to enjoy both the thrill and the scenery. I highly recommend this adventure!
This was our first activity in Iceland, and what a spectacular introduction it was — riding powerful ATVs through black sand beaches, volcanic terrain, and breathtaking landscapes. The experience was thrilling, safe, and unforgettable.
If you’re looking for the best ATV tour in Iceland, this is it. Incredible views, expert guides, and the perfect way to discover Iceland’s unique geological wonders. Can’t recommend them enough 👌🏽
Favorite part of a two week trip to Iceland! We had Ali (?) as our guide for a 4-hour ATV tour, from the get-go he proved to be extremely friendly, knowledgeable and professional, which helped us have a lot of fun along the way. They suit you up so you can stay warm and dry no matter the weather conditions, which means you can actually focus on enjoying the ride. Would totally recommend and would even go as far as to book again in the future!
