South Coast: The Wonders Tour

5.0

Travel in the comfort of a Land Rover Discovery, and experience the dramatic landscapes of Iceland's volcanic south coast. Your guide is a born-and-raised local who grew up in the shadow of these glaciers and volcanoes, trading the standard commentary for firsthand stories of the land, its sagas, and the people who shaped it.

Driving Tour

The Coast

The South Coast is Iceland's most visited stretch of road, and most travelers experience it from the window of a tour bus on a fixed timetable. This private journey reverses that model. Traveling in the comfort of a Land Rover Discovery, you set the pace and your local guide decides when to stop, where to linger, and which stories to tell based on where you are, not a printed schedule.

The Route

The drive begins east from Reykjavík toward Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can walk behind when conditions allow, and the nearby less visited Gluggafoss. Further along the coast, Skógafoss drops 60 meters into a basin where Viking settlers are said to have buried a chest of gold behind the cascade. The road continues past glacier tongues to Dyrhólaey, a promontory with a massive rock arch, and Reynisfjara, where black volcanic sand meets towering basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks rise from the Atlantic. Between stops, the landscape shifts constantly: glacier caps, coastal farmlands, volcanic ridgelines, and the open ocean. By the end of the day, you will have covered the most concentrated stretch of Icelandic geology in a single drive.

The Local Difference

Your guide is not reading from a script. This is someone who grew up on the stories of the settlers, the eruptions, and the folklore of every waterfall and rock formation along this coast. Because this is a private tour, the day follows your pace, with time for questions, detours, and lunch at a spot your guide knows personally. This is for travelers who want the South Coast told, not just shown. It is not for those who are happy with a bus seat and a checklist.

If I could give this 10 stars, I would!!! Our guide was fantastic and he felt like part of the family within minutes. We booked a one-day private tour on the South coast. We had already planned some stops ourselves on the South coast he made a custom itinerary that included many unknown spots. We went off roading to an ice cave, complete with crampons and helmets. He took us behind some awesome waterfalls, helped point out how to find puffins, shared where we could safely drink water straight from the waterfall (basically anywhere), eat delicious sour candy plants, and he took photos and made sure we got to experience cream-based ice cream from the gas station (do NOT miss this)! If I could do it again, I would have booked him for 3 days with our family. His pup, is an absolute added bonus if you like dogs. The guide is an Icelander with so much knowledge and love for his country. I learned so much while driving around with him. Our kids enjoyed him, his dog, and every sight he shared with us! Will definitely be back!

The guide and his dog were the perfect guides on a fantastic day tour of gorgeous South Iceland. His deep love and knowledge of his home country are outmatched only by his friendliness and dog's charms. Highest recommendation from Nate, Heather, and Jane!

Best day in Iceland for sure! The guide is the best! If you can entertain 2 sixteen year old boys for 9 hours you have a gift and he has it! He is a wealth of knowledge and sooo much fun! If you are going to Iceland you MUST book this tour, you wont regret it!
