Silver Circle: The Viking Heartland
While most travelers crowd the Golden Circle, the deeper history and striking geology of Iceland sit just to the west. On this private tour, a born-and-raised local guide takes you into the Silver Circle. You will explore Europe's most powerful hot spring, walk alongside cascading lava waterfalls, and trace the footsteps of medieval Viking writers.

Overview
The Heartland
West Iceland is where the raw geology of the country meets its richest history. The Borgarfjörður region, known as the Silver Circle, is defined by its birch forests, moss-covered lava fields, and steaming geothermal energy. Because this is a private journey, you bypass the crowded bus routes of the south and explore a landscape that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
The Route
We start at Deildartunguhver, the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe, where boiling water violently surfaces from deep within the earth. From there, we step into history at Reykholt, the 13th-century home of Snorri Sturluson, the legendary author whose medieval sagas shaped Icelandic culture. The landscape gets more dramatic at Hraunfossar, where clear glacial water seeps directly through the porous wall of a massive lava field. Just steps away, the churning blue waters of Barnafoss cut through a narrow volcanic gorge. We end by walking up the Grábrók volcanic craters for sweeping views of the ancient lava fields below.
The Local Difference
History hits differently when a local tells the story. Traveling with a guide who grew up on these sagas turns a beautiful landscape into a living narrative. You dictate the pace. If you want to spend extra time at the waterfalls or pivot to a hidden local lunch spot, we adapt the day to you.

Lovely day with guide Margaret to experience the Silver Circle. Beautiful, new, comfortable large van. Helpful history and orientation to the sites… as well as her help to choose some Icelandic candy. She found us a fun, quirky, casual lunch spot (a hot dog in a hot house) that felt very unique.
Wow. If you want to see Iceland and learn about this incredible place you could not have a better guide! Truly a magnificent experience. I highly recommend!
