Overview

The Wetsuit Advantage

Most tours at the Silfra fissure put you in a restrictive, buoyant drysuit that keeps you floating on the surface. This experience is different. Equipped with premium, cold-water freediving wetsuits, you actually have the mobility to dive below the surface and swim freely through the glacial meltwater. You do not need a freediving certification to join, just the ability to swim and a desire to explore.

The Continental Rift

Located inside Þingvellir National Park, Silfra is a tear in the earth's crust caused by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The glacial water here is filtered through underground lava fields for decades before entering the fissure, resulting in over 100 meters of pure, crystal-clear visibility.

The Local Difference

Getting into a wetsuit in the Icelandic elements can be daunting. Unlike most operators who have you change in the parking lot, this tour provides a dedicated, heated changing van. It is a small but vital detail that completely changes your comfort level before and after the water.

Included

  • Premium cold-water freediving wetsuit and snorkeling gear
  • Access to a heated changing van
  • All Þingvellir National Park diving fees
  • Hot beverages after the dive
  • Professional local guide

What to bring

  • Swimsuit (to wear underneath the wetsuit)
  • Towel
  • Comfortable warm clothing (to wear before and after)

From the first email to goodbyes after the tour, this was such an amazing company! I went with my sister and we loved our experience! The guide was kind, friendly and informative. He (Bjarni) was extremely helpful with all the gear and getting us through the tour. I also exchanged several emails with the company beforehand and they always got back to be in great time and with helpful info. The tour itself is stunning! The wetsuits, gloves, socks and hood kept me warm through the cold water. Very manageable and beautiful sites! Highly recommend

We loved our snorkeling tour with Freedive. We did a private tour (2 of us plus the guide) and had the perfect amount of education and viewing. The water is extremely cold but our wetsuits kept us warmer than we expected. Your face will go numb though! The water is totally clear and you can see through to the bottom. It’s a surreal experience being between the tectonic plates. Definitely don’t miss Little Silfra in the lagoon area too.

Me and my husband got lucky and had a private tour since no one else showed up! Bjarni was our guide and he was great, very nice and very knowledgeable. He showed us the best spots to take pictures and videos. We loved it so much we would’ve 100% went back at the tail end of our trip if we hadn’t gotten tattoos. The wetsuits kept us very warm the only thing that was cold was our face, but you get used to it super fast. We are from Alabama and do not like the cold and we did just fine!

If you're going to experience Silfra, this is the way to do it. We had no doubt that we wanted the opportunity to go under rather than just bobbing on the surface in a drysuit. Our guide was great and shared good knowledge beforehand on where we would be going and gave us some great tips. The warm van and high-quality equipment were appreciated, this company has really thought everything through to make this a comfortable experience. I'm not any good at freediving yet (still a month or so away from taking my courses) but still felt very safe in our small group and had a great time. Even as a beginner, you won't regret giving this a try!

My sister and I did the freedive at Silfra. It was a great experience. The water was chilly but you wear a 7mm wetsuit which keeps you comfortable. The cold water is only on your face but it is tolerable, you don't feel uncomfortable at all. Silfra is stunning. The water changes from a brownish hue to blue to green and it is clear. And even though there is no sea life, there is much to look at.
